Little is known of X'ane Fahnah's early life, and what little she remembers rarely comes without uncertainty. She believes she was born in Eastern La Noscea to X'fahnah, a Seeker of the Sun Miqo'te, and Aedith, a Midlander Hyur woman. Her memories of both are fragmented, reduced to fleeting impressions of a home, familiar voices, and a life she can no longer fully recall. Whether those memories are accurate or merely warped pieces of something her mind has struggled to preserve, she cannot say.

At sixteen, X'ane left home to seek a life of her own. Adventure offered freedom, and she took to it readily. Through years of travel and work, she developed a talent for pugilism, learning to rely on her speed, instincts, and ability to keep moving when a fight turned against her. She became capable enough to earn her keep and make her way through the world, finding a certain comfort in the independence she had carved out for herself.

By nineteen, she was ready to venture beyond Eorzea. When an opportunity arose to sail for Tural aboard a merchant vessel, she took it without much hesitation. It was meant to be another journey, another opportunity to see the world.

She had no way of knowing it would be the last journey she remembered as the woman she had been.

X'ane's voyage to Tural began as little more than another opportunity to see the world. After arriving, she found work escorting a merchant traveling between Shaaloani and Yyasulani. The journey was meant to be straightforward, another stretch of road between one destination and the next.

Then the sky disappeared.

A vast dome of darkness and crackling lightning descended over the region, swallowing the land beneath an unnatural storm. The world beyond vanished behind a barrier that seemed to separate those caught within it from everything they had ever known. The suddenness of it left little time to understand what was happening.

X'ane remembers fragments: the strange light, the violence of the storm, and the confusion of those around her. Then her memories become unreliable.

She eventually found herself a prisoner beneath Yuweyawata Field Station, far from the road she had been traveling. How she was taken there, what became of the merchant and the others, and how much time passed between the storm and her captivity remain questions she has never been able to answer.

What she could not have known was that the world beyond the dome continued on almost as though nothing had happened. By the time she finally escaped and learned the truth, only days had passed outside.

For X'ane, however, those days would become decades

X'ane remembers Yuweyawata in fragments: cold rooms, unfamiliar voices, restraints, and the constant feeling of being watched. The researchers treated her not as a person, but as a subject whose body and soul were materials to be studied.

Their work involved experimental Alexandrian technology and attempts to graft animal souls into living subjects. X'ane was neither a chosen candidate nor someone whose destiny demanded this fate. She was simply a healthy young woman who had fallen into the wrong hands.

The procedures nearly killed her.

Her body changed in ways she could neither predict nor control. Her skin took on a violet hue, scales spread across her body, and a long, fish-like tail replaced what had once been familiar. Her senses became unnaturally sharp, leaving ordinary sounds and casual touches overwhelming until she learned to live with them. She gained an affinity for water, the ability to breathe beneath its surface, and strange powers that seemed to reach beyond the physical.

The most unsettling change was one she could not see. The souls used in the experiments had become inseparable from her own. She felt no distinct voices or foreign wills within herself, no collection of strangers competing for control. As far as she could tell, there was only one soul now: hers. Whatever she had been before, the experiment had changed what she was.

Her memories suffered alongside her body. Names, faces, and entire stretches of time slipped beyond her reach, leaving her uncertain of what she had forgotten and what she had never known. Without a reliable sense of time passing, she could not measure her captivity in days, months, or years.

She never learned what the researchers ultimately hoped to achieve, nor whether they considered her transformation a success. She only knew that she had been taken apart in the name of discovery and left to live with the consequences.

Whatever the experiments had made of her, X'ane had never consented to any of it.

X'ane's escape came through chaos rather than careful planning. A catastrophic disturbance tore through Yuweyawata, leaving the facility badly damaged. Doors hung broken, corridors lay in ruin, and whatever order the researchers had maintained collapsed into confusion. Amid the destruction, X'ane found an opening through a damaged door and fled.

She barely understood where she was going. Somewhere in the wreckage, she came dangerously close to something she knew instinctively she could not fight. She escaped by little more than luck and the desperate need to keep moving. By the time she reached the outside world, she had no plan beyond surviving.

The years that followed were spent beneath the dome, in a landscape scarred by lightning and cut off from the life she had once known. X'ane learned to conceal her unfamiliar features beneath a cloak, avoid unnecessary attention, and rely on the skills that had kept her alive long before her captivity. Her altered instincts helped her recognize danger, but they did not make survival easy.

She spent much of that time helping others where she could. On one occasion, after exhausting herself trying to assist those in need, she fell asleep in a place where she could no longer keep watch over her surroundings. A Shetona woman found her there, injured and worn down by the struggle to survive.

Rather than question her appearance or demand an explanation, the woman gave her food, tended to her wounds, and returned the following day to check on her. What began as a small kindness became a daily presence, and eventually an unlikely friendship. In time, the woman took X'ane under her wing, offering guidance and companionship in a world that had given her precious little of either.

Together, they worked to help survivors. For the first time since her captivity, X'ane found herself able to lower her guard around another person. The woman treated her as someone worth knowing, not an experiment to be examined or a curiosity to be feared. Then, one day, she disappeared...

X'ane never discovered what became of her. There was no answer she could trust, no explanation to bring their time together to a proper close. The loss left her with another unanswered question, one she carries to this day.

Eventually, the barrier opened and the isolated region became accessible to the outside world. Only then did X'ane begin to understand the cruel disparity between the time she had endured and the time the rest of the world had lost. Nearly thirty years had passed beneath the dome, yet only days had passed beyond it.

She had entered Tural at nineteen. She emerged from the experience with decades of memories she could not fully account for, a body she barely recognized, and a world that had scarcely noticed she was missing.

Returning to Eorzea did not mean returning to the life X'ane had left behind.

Chronologically, she was forty-nine years old, though she appeared considerably younger. The distinction mattered less to her than the feeling that she had somehow become a stranger in a world that should have been familiar. The years beneath the dome had changed her, and the missing pieces of her memory made it difficult to explain even to herself what she had endured. Everyone else had continued living while she had spent decades surviving.

Outside, X'ane often keeps to herself. She is reserved around strangers, more comfortable observing a room than becoming its center of attention. Her appearance invites questions she rarely wishes to answer, and the world beyond the dome can feel like a place she no longer quite belongs to.

But she has never been content to let her past make every decision for her.

At some point, she began calling herself a Siren. The name was not given to her by the researchers, nor was it a title she accepted from someone who claimed to understand what she had become. It was a name she chose for herself, acknowledging her unfamiliar form without surrendering her identity to the circumstances that had created it. Whatever she had been before Yuweyawata, she would decide what came next.

She returned to adventuring, took up trade, and eventually established Siren's Whisper. More than a business, the venue became a place where she could feel comfortable among others without having to explain herself. Within its walls, she could relax, socialize, flirt, and enjoy the company of people drawn together by nothing more complicated than a desire to have a good time.

It also gave her a way to learn about the world she had returned to. Conversations, passing rumors, and the stories of travelers offered glimpses of everything that had changed, or had forgotten, while she was gone. She could gather information without always having to expose too much of herself in return.

At Siren's Whisper, X'ane is more open, more at ease, and far less inclined to hide behind her cloak. It is a place where she can choose how much of herself to share, and where being different does not have to mean being alone.

She still searches for answers. She wonders about her parents, the people who experimented on her, the nature of the soul she now carries, and the fate of the woman who helped her survive. Those questions may never be answered, but they remain hers to pursue.

She may never fully understand what she was before, or everything she became beneath that broken sky... But she knows who gets to decide what happens next.

Her name is X'ane Fahnah. She is a Siren. And her life belongs to her.
